Why Cyprus

Cyprus is an island from the cool pine covered Troodos Mountains to the miles of attractive coastline with golden beaches and crystal clear water. Cyprus is a place for everyone and has something for everyone.

On average this island enjoys 300 days of sunshine ranting from delightful spring times producing an abundance of flowers for any nature lower to hot dry summers which can be enjoyed by the sea front with a quick dive in its beautiful waters.

There are many reasons to choose Cyprus, wonderful climate all year round, the English language is extensively spoken (the second language most popular after Greek), all familiar brands are available all over the island and the driving system is the same as the United Kingdom(on the left).

Like most other towns on the Southern coast, Larnaca was refashioned by the building boom of the late 1970s. The closure of Nicosia airport due to the Turkish occupation led to the airstrip outside Larnaca being extended and new terminal buildings being built. This facilitated a considerable increase in tourist traffic, and a number of large hotels were constructed on the long beach situated just outside the town.

One of Larnaca’s most distinctive features is the mid-town seaside promenade lined with tall palm trees. A project to improve the area around the promenade – known as the Finikoudes – and turn it into a large precinct bordered by taverns and a sandy beach was recently completed. The takeover of the yacht marina by a private company (from the Cyprus government), which plans to invest heavily in the marina’s expansion, will result in a sharp boost in property value in the area.

The advantages of Larnaca as a tourist resort are also numerous. The town is large enough to give everything one may need, but still is not overcrowded, especially at its beautiful beaches which extend for 25km.

Summer sports, sea activities and cruises are readily available. The shops are well stocked, medical care is excellent, and its cinemas are screening films simultaneously with the cinemas of Europe and the USA. The variety of restaurants, taverns, cafeterias and bars is fantastic. The Cyprus “meze” is the food specialty of the town. Nightlife is interesting and safety in the streets unsurpassed. Cultural life is rich and many events are organized by the town’s Municipality almost daily.

Situated in a strategic position, Larnaca is located in the centre of the island and is an ideal base for exploring the rest of Cyprus. Its residents benefit from Larnaca International Airport and close proximity to the remaining cities in Cyprus. Nicosia, the capital, is only a 20-minute drive away and reaching Limassol takes just 30 minutes driving time.

Pervolia boasts a beautiful paved village square which is located next to the old church. The square comes to life in the evening when the locals (around 1600 at present) and tourists come together while enjoying local food and wine in the taverns and restaurants.

The local economy is agriculture based but over the last few years it has developed into a small tourist attraction without losing its unique character. It attracts discerning tourists who prefer small charming places away from the hustle and bustle of main towns.

You will not find any large hotel complexes just an idyllic peaceful setting with charming and helpful people who will let you be a part of their community and who will welcome you with open arms. Pervolia is famous for its amazing friendly inhabitants and it is common for strangers to start conversations with you in the street.

Even in the peak tourist seasons, the beaches are not crowded and they are known for their crystal-clear water. The beaches around Pervolia are well suited for children because the sea bed declines very gradually thus allowing children to play safely.

The area is developing at quite a pace and has many amenities already in place such as mini markets, a post office and a variety of bars and restaurants.

Electricity Current

The electricity in Cyprus is 240 volts, a.c. 50Hz. Sockets are usually 13 amps, square pin in most buildings. More than one low current rating appliance may be operated from the same supply point, by using an adapter. The use of adapters is essential for operating high current rating appliances. Many hotels provide adapters upon request from the reception. They can also be purchased from supermarkets.

Hitch Hiking

Hitch Hiking is not restricted in Cyprus, but certainly is not one of the regular means of transportation. Such means of transportation can be tiresome in the hot summer months, but may turn out to be a great pleasure as Cypriot hospitality is legendary, and hikers will certainly experience the friendliness and simplicity of Cypriots, especially among the village folk. Hikers are advised to wear sunhats and sunglasses in summer, while waiting for their free ride. Hitch-Hikers should always remember to keep to the left-hand side of the road, as driving in Cyprus moves on the left.

Emergency

The Police, Fire Brigade and Emergency Medical Services number is: 199

It is strongly advised to have Medical Insurance when on holiday as the cost for necessary treatment is likely to be very high. Emergency treatment in hospitals is free, however you may like to transfer to a private clinic once first aid has been administered. In a case that a Doctor/Dentist is needed, contact your travel office to have English speaking Doctor/Dentist appointed to you.
